I’m linking up with my sweet friend, Gussy, for my blog post today ;)
It’s really hard for me to stick a schedule (since my days are a constant stop-and-go with Dax), but I usually do the same routine nonetheless. Here’s a typical day in my life…
I wake up, get ready, and sneak to my studio to get a few things done while Dax sleeps. But first, a stop in the kitchen to whip up my favorite chocolate breakfast- Shakeology! (This is notable, since I used to NEVER have anything for breakfast, and if I did it was a frappuchino or a coke). Since I’ve been on my road to being healthy and fit, I’ve been starting my days with a Shakeology, and it really gets my energy flowin’! I also take this time to spend with Piper, and to read some favorite blogs.
I start my work day by checking emails and responding to as many of them as possible. I enter new orders into my Business Management system, and check my website stats. Then I evaluate my packages for shipping (mark as shipped, print labels if I need to), and put them out for the mail. If I have any extra time before Dax wakes, I work on digital proofs for my paper studio customers.
Dax gets up and I fix his breakfast and cuddle with him on the sofa (while he snuggles with his blanket and eats his toast). I should probably mention that this is one of my favorite moments of everyday <3 Being able to see him everyday is the best thing about owning my own business- I never miss out on any time with him. After snuggle time, I get him dressed and ready for the day, and we head to the studio/classroom for his lessons. This is the first week for homeschooling, but so far it’s working out great ;)
Time to get back to work and check things off of my teuxdeux list. I honestly don’t think that I could live without this now that I’ve been using it daily. It keeps me on track and eliminates the post it notes that used to bury my desk. For the most part, I spend this time working on new blog designs while printing orders in my que.
I break for lunch and then more Dax time. I usually help him build a new train track on his Thomas train table, or whatever else he’s wanting to do. I try to get him down for a nap around 2pm, but I’m very lucky if that plan follows through, lol.
Back to designing! My afternoons are spent listening to music and being creative. I honestly love the afternoons most! I also use this time to run errands, pick up supplies, and venture out with Dax if he’s having a ‘bored’ day.
1 – 2 days a week I spend this time to work on my paper studio-assemble invitations, print large orders, and create digital proofs.
After Chris gets home, we chat about our day for a bit and then do our workout. (We are currently doing the Chalean Extreme (and love it!)- mainly b/c it’s not such a huge time commitment like the P90X was). After our workout we usually make dinner and play with Dax.
I spend the last hours of my day finishing up my teuxdeux list and getting things ready for the next day. I packages orders, send mockups to my design clients, and finish answering emails. I’m also usually listening to Angry Birds on my living room TV, while Dax and Chris sit on the sofa and play together. Chris also reads to Dax at night and gets him bathed and ready for bed. Did I mention that these are usually my most productive hours of the day?
ME TIME! Bubble baths and comfy PJs! Then it’s lots of kisses and off to bed.
*Dax and I usually go to a playdate once a week, and we have family/friends that visits regularly during the week too. So there’s basically never a dull moment around here!
On average, I work 10-12 hours a day, and I take Saturdays off and half a day on Sunday. Some weeks I work more hours, and some less- it just depends on what’s going on. I should note that when I first started my business, it seemed like I was working 16-18 hours a day. (And I probably was.) It took quite a while before I got things under control and figured out, and I can remember Chris asking me ‘Will you ever stop working?”. Hehe… he still says that on some days! It’s really hard to stop doing what you love to do- and sometimes I get so involved with my work that I have to remind myself that it’s time to stop for today!
So a day in my life is probably not your typical idea of a work day, but I LOVE my days. It’s been a bumpy road getting up to this point, but I think I’ll always love the fact that I can stay home with my son and do what I love to do- create!
I asked my aunt a few days ago if she thought that this was the best time of my life- because I honestly think it is ;) I don’t think it could get any better than this…
What’s the best part of YOUR day?
