We’re starting Preschool on Monday, and I’m so excited! My husband and I will be homeschooling Dax, and I’ve been planning and preparing for what seems like quite a while now. But maybe I should start at the beginning…
When I was pregnant and made the decision to start a business from home, we also talked about homeschooling our child(ren). I absolutely LOVE the idea, but my main concern was knowing (or not knowing) what and when to teach some things. We found out about the K-12 program (which we are still highly considering) and it seems like a fantastic idea- free, online, certified teachers, testing, social activities.. but no Preschool. So I started digging and digging, and looking at different programs, but eventually Chris and I decided that we wanted to create our own curriculum.
We had already started purchasing workbooks and supplies a couple of weeks ago, so I was stocked with materials to use. I read good things about the Letter of the Week curriculum ($ free), and while reading reviews about it I stumbled on another Letter of the Week curriculum (for $10). How funny is it that I ended up combining the two (and added some other things) to create Dax’s. I didn’t want to order a ‘kit’ and have everything sent to me- b/c that would take the fun out of it, hehe. I wanted to go on a scavenger hunt of sorts to collect the things we’ll need. Why? Because I’m nuts… and crafty… and it’s another reason for Dax and I to spend some much needed time together outside of the house.
We also decided to go with the Workbox system, which I adapted and finally completed last night. I can already see how great it’s going to be when trying to stay organized. Since Dax’s school area is on one side of my studio, keeping things separate and organized is a MUST. I already had one of the suggested setups for some paper supplies, so I just relocated them and turned the storage into Dax’s new workbox system… And he loves it <3 Doesn’t it look perfect against his chalkboard wall?
So Week 1 is all about the Letter A. (And I already know what game he’ll want to play, lol. I’ll give you a hint, it starts with ‘A’ and ends with Birds. ;) I finished up my Lesson Plans for the first few weeks, so I just have a few last things to buy this weekend. I bet I’m in for an exciting journey, and I can’t wait to share it with Dax- he is going to do great! I’ll let you know how week 1 goes….
Do any of you homeschool? I’d love to hear any advice or reading suggestions!
*For those of you who are using the workbox system, I’m including 2 free printables for download. The first has subject squares and some empty squares for you to add your own to. The second is the numbers 1-10, and gold stars (for when your student(s) do a great job). Although my system is not exactly the same as Sue’s, you may find these to be helpful for your own workbox system :) *
