Our adventure began downtown on Saturday afternoon. Chris and I decided to take Dax to a Mardi Gras parade, the Krewe of Orion. We’ve never actually been to a parade in Baton Rouge (we usually venture out to the New Orleans & Metairie Parades)- but we decided to give it a shot. I’m so glad we did, because we had the BEST time!
The crowds were a lot less rowdy than the New Orleans parade, and parking was much much easier as well. We walked around downtown for about an hour before the parade started, and I was able to take some really great photos… (So many in fact, that I will have a follow up post to share them all with you!)
As we walked through the streets, the vendors started showing up- and Dax seemed very confused by them- lol. For kids- it’s usually the highlight of the day. The vendors push huge buggies filled with boas, inflatable toys, hats, glowing swords, pacifiers, beads, and more. I love how colorful and fun they look moving down the street. We bought Dax a sword that has mutli colored lights and makes slashing noises when you swing it.
After our walk, we found a spot on River Road and waited for the parade. Waiting for a parade always feels like torture- especially when it’s cold outside. Luckily, this year the weather has been fantastic so far!
The parade started passing and Dax wasn’t so sure about the whole thing. He seemed scared of all of the horns and whistles and sirens- and it probably didn’t help that he didn’t have a nap all day. Despite being uncertain, he got so many toys and beads! Although, he did have some favorites:
The floats were very pretty- painted and designed with the utmost detail. There were actually a lot more floats in this parade than we expected, and that meant more beads to catch! I wish I could share some with all of you =)
I’ll be back soon with the rest of the photos and a video or two!
Have you ever been to Mardi Gras? If yes- what did you think of it?
