Soooo, we’ve acquired three fish tanks since the beginning of the year- and the one in our living room is now filled with babies! Two of our convict (zebra) cichlids made a ‘nest’, laid eggs, and are now very proud parents of… well a LOT of little babies. I have never actually witnessed anything quite like it. Seven baby cichlids were given to us over the summer, and we have really enjoyed watching them grow. We were told that once they reached about 6 months, they would pair up and breed. The females get rainbow colored bellies when they are ready to breed, and they are much smaller in size compared to the males.
Once they paired up we knew it would only be a matter of time. These two fishies claimed the cave as their home, and made it quite clear to the others that they were not welcome. We kept checking for eggs and didn’t see any. Well, apparently we skipped a few days. On Sunday we noticed that they had babies in tow! It’s amazing how much they have grown in just 2 days! If they venture out too far, the mommy comes and sucks them up in her mouth and then spits them out back into the cave. It’s kind of cute lol. The daddys job is to hoard the food, so as soon as it’s feeding time he grabs as much as he can and brings it to the bottom of the nest for the babies to eat on. Our goldfish laid eggs over the summer, and ate them. Their appetites obviously rule all. But the cichlids are really great parents. I’m going to be sad when we have to give them away!
Every time I get close to the glass, the daddy fish starts patrolling and being very protective as you can see in the video. The mommy usually stays inside of the cave and stands guard. You can also see the food inside of their home- it’s a feast!
I thought I’d also add a video of Dax’s latest food fave & phrase. Peanut butter bagel. It makes me laugh every time. (Don’t mind the cords and boxes that he made a mess of please =)
Anything new and exciting going on this week?
