As I’ve been planning my wedding for October 3rd, I have run across many things that I’d love to incorporate to keep it as ‘non-traditional’ as possible. As far as cakes go, I was planning on getting a topsy turvy cake that was very whimsical, with dots and stripes and flowers. Well, now I think I’ve decided to do a cupcake tower instead. I like the idea of it being different, and also since we are having kids at our wedding, I’d like it to be more fun for them. And what kid doesn’t like cupcakes? Now before you get the thought that it’s not wedding-y enough, let me show you some pictures I have found for inspiration:
This tower is made like a square tiered wedding cake, with cupcakes all along the edges. Each tier is adorned with a ribbon and bow.
Now on to the cupcakes. I tried out a white cake recipe from marthastewart.com, along with her buttercream icing- and I had some mixed results. The buttercream icing was pretty good- but the cake however, was not so wonderful. It was a bit dry, and tasted nothing like traditional white cake. If anyone has a wedding cake recipe to share, please do! I always loved wedding cake, and I thought it had something else in it besides just vanilla- maybe almond extract? I am going to keep experimenting with other recipes until it is perfect. I have decided to combine some decorating ideas- including a tag that says ‘Eat Me’, along with a white/violet flower that has a silver dragee in the center. Here are some of the photos I have collected:
This is the type of icing I am using for the cupcakes, although it will be lavender. While I do love the fondant hearts, I think I have decided to do something along the lines of these little flowers:
And then of course, the flags on each would be something like this:
